The stats of this day will be at the end of the post.  Meanwhile, I have a long story about the Schools Tour Memory Run that I took today.

I’m in the town where my Mom and Dad live, and where I was raised.  So, this morning, after my long night with a box…a big box of See’s Candy, I had to do a run before I go on to my spiritual retreat in Rancho Palos Verdes.    I ran up to Ventura Boulevard, and immediately thought of the Tom Petty song.  I trucked on down to turn left, and realized that I would be running by each of my elementary schools, and my jr. high school.  Here are the stats of the run, in case you’ve gotten this far:

Date: 2/15/2008 9:00 AM
Type: Easy
Course: Schools Tour
Distance: 2.65 miles
Duration: 27:00
Pace: 10:12 / mile
Shoe: Asics
Weather: Sunny
Statistics: VO2 Max: 28.6 Calories 359

First, I ran by Collins Street School.  This is no longer open.  When I was in 6th grade, I did a 50 yard dash in 6 seconds, beating all the boys.  Every last one of them challenged me after school to a race.  I do think the teacher miscalculated, because I was never fast.  But, it was the first of many face-offs I would have with boys who thought they were better than me.  (Another day, I’ll post about the time we petitioned our principal so that girls could wear pants.)  It was 1970.

Then, I trucked on by Pinecrest School.  I went there from K-2nd grade, and was put ahead in 3rd because I was bright.  I was.  I am.  The memories there are of lovely cots for our naps, and Mrs. Bishop, who I loved more than life itself.  She gave me the gift of reading, and I will never forget her.

Lastly, I went by Hughes Jr. High, which was where The Karate Kid was filmed.  Remember that part where he jumped over the fence and ran into a field?  That wasn’t a field, it was my Mother’s Street.  They spliced it in.  I remember many many things there…most I don’t want to print.

When I got back up to Ventura, I thought I would puke, so I stopped.  At 27:00, I was disappointed, as I’m training for another race in March (12K…I know, I’ll walk a LOT of that).  My goal for the day was to run 40:00.  So, after the nausea stopped, I did the Schools Tour, Part 2.  The stats are here.  I did it.  Under 10 minutes average for the day.  I’m happy.

Oh, when I started to get sick?  When I took off my hat.  Better keep that thing around.
